Globallast receives Queen's Award

The Implementation Team of the GEF/UNDP/IMO Global Ballast Water Management Programme (GloBallast), comprising the Programme Coordination Unit at IMO in London and the country counterparts in the six GloBallast Pilot Countries (Brazil, China, India, I.R. Iran, South Africa and Ukraine), with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for the Marine Environment by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

IMarEST (http://www.imarest.org) has been a non-governmental organization in consultative status with IMO since 1995. The aim of this award is to recognise individuals or groups who have made significant contribution to the advancement of marine engineering, science and technology, maritime safety or pollution prevention of the marine environment.

It is encouraging to note, that while this international award was open to the full spectrum of marine issues globally, ALL THREE of the finalists were projects addressing invasive aquatic species, with two of those being related to ballast water, and the other hull fouling.

GloBallast was listed as one of three finalists by the judging panel in March 2003, and the winner was announced on 1st October 2003. The award comprises an engraved, gold medal and certificate, which will be displayed in the foyer of IMO Headquarters in London, with certificates also being sent to the Pilot Countries, UNDP and GEF.
